Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, on Friday, stressed on the importance of reaching a peaceful solution regarding the disagreements between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir conflict.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Minister Shahid made these statements on a phone call with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

Stating that both Pakistan and India are close friends and bilateral partners of the Maldives, Minister Shahid emphasized that resolving differences amicably through peaceful means was paramount.

Additionally, Minister Shahid declared that Maldives viewed the decision taken by India regarding Article 370 of the Indian Constitution as an internal matter.

Article 370 allowed Kashmir a certain amount of autonomy, such as its own constitution, a separate flag and the freedom to make laws. Revoking the Article will bifurcate the state into two Union territories – Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature, and Ladakh, which will be without a legislature.

During the call, Minister Shahid also assured Minister Qureshi that Maldives will always remain a close friend of Pakistan, further expressing his confidence that the Maldives and Pakistan will continue to cooperate in advancing interests on areas of mutual concern, bilaterally, regionally, and internationally.
