Maldives Police have released the arrested participants from the marathon run organized by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) that was to be held on Friday.

At the beginning of the event, police intervened and arrested several MDP members, including the party chairperson Hassan Latheef, vice chair person Ali Niyaz and the MDP parliamentary representative for the Maafannu Uthuru (North) constituency MP Imthiyaz Fahumy (Inthi) and two other members - all of whom have since been released.

The event, named "Jazeera Run" (Island Run), is part of MDP's campaign efforts towards the upcoming Presidential Elections 2018.

After the MDP run had been planned to take place at the running track, the Ministry of Youth and Sports announced that the track would be closed to the public from 2:00 pm in the afternoon until 6:30 pm in the evening.

Hence, the participants chose to move the marathon run on to the streets.

Other recent events organized by MDP have also met similar ends. Recently, Civil Court ordered the halting of MDP's Primary Elections for Presidential Candidates, resulting in police intervention and a number of arrests.

However, MDP's Primary Elections did resume activity, and the party had announced the results.

Currently, some councillors involved in the Primary Elections remain under suspension.
