COVID-19: Maldives 1,433 record cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Sunday announced that 1,433 tested positive for COVID-19.

HPA has been working to clear a backlog of samples collected, and as such, out of the samples that tested positive today, only 594 cases were positive from those collected within the past 24 hours, and the remaining 839 were from the backlog.

This increased the confirmed COVID cases in the country to a total of 45,956.

Meanwhile, 390 people made full recoveries, bringing the total figure to 28,849 to date.

HPA revealed that of the new cases, 1,294 were from the greater Male’ region while 134 cases were from residential islands and five from operational resorts.

Currently, Maldives is in its worst COVID wave still date with 16,997 active cases. This is the highest figure has been since the first case was found.

To curb the rapid spread of COVID-19 in Maldives, HPA has strengthened the restrictive measures. This includes increasing curfew hours and extending the curfew duration as well.

On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 164 million people and claimed over 3.4 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 144 million people have recovered.
