Islamic Ministry authorizes use of Zakat Fund to aid tertiary students

Ministry of Islamic Affairs, on Wednesday, authorized the use of the Zakat Fund to aid Maldivian higher education students facing financial difficulties amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a tweet by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Ahmed Zahir Ali, tertiary students can request for financial assistance from Thursday onwards.

Students are requested to email their applications to [email protected]. The form is available for download on the ministry's website.

As per the ministry, only courses which are certified under Islamic Shariah, as well as are courses ranging from Maldives National Qualifications Framework (MNQF) Levels 5 to 10, are accepted by the programme.

Furthermore, in order to qualify, students must also be eligible for the Zakat Fund.

The initiative was implemented upon requested by Minister of Higher Education Dr Ibrahim Hassan.
