The prosecution has entered a plea bargain with a person involved in threatening former MP of Maradhoo Constituency Ibrahim Shareef (Mavota) during the run-off to presidential elections last year.
This plea bargain was signed with Ibrahim Yunais from Uraha, Laamu atoll Gan, who was arrested in connection to the threat against the former parliamentarian inside Manhattan Business Hotel while he was engaged in polling work for the runoff elections ongoing at the time.
Yunais was charged with threatening to commit an offence that may inflict serious harm on another.
Addressing the case, the prosecution revealed that Yunais had entered a room in Manhattan Business Hotel where Shareef was present and warned the (then) parliamentarian that he will be attacked if spotted on the streets.
The agreement signed with the prosecution allows to penalize the accused with a fine if a confession to the crime is given.
The Criminal Court ruling decreed that in light of the plea bargain signed with the defendant, the penalty enforced over Yunais in connection to the case is a period of two months and twelve days which reduces to a total of twelve days once the 60 days he spent in remand are deducted.
Due to the agreement which concedes to replace this sentence with a fine, the court then ruled to settle an amount equivalent to 12 days - MVR 2,400 within a period of three months.
Local authorities had arrested a total of four individuals in relation to the incident.
