The advertising of sorcery on social media is becoming increasingly common.
Posts have been appearing on Facebook promoting contact numbers for information related to sorcery and witchcraft.
These posts often advertise services such as love spells, curse removals, and fortune telling.
Despite such practices being strictly forbidden in Islam, many of the posts receive comments from users expressing interest. Numerous Telegram groups are also reportedly promoting similar content.
Some people have raised concerns over the lack of action to curb these activities, which involve taking money from people under the guise of providing sorcery services.
Alhough considered one of the major sins in Islam, the practice of sorcery appears to have become widespread in Maldives. Some claim that witchcraft is being used to break up marriages and sabotage businesses.
In response, authorities have searched several homes on different islands, confiscating various items believed to be linked to sorcery. A number of arrests have also been made.
However, many of these cases fail to reach trial due to difficulties in collecting evidence and other legal obstacles.
