The Local Government Authority (LGA) has ordered Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo to desist from levying fees against those who choose to give up residency in the country. They stated that the council's decision contravenes the constitutional rights of all citizens to move and live on any island in the Maldives.
In a bid to have Thinadhoo declared as a city, the council is aiming to increase the population of the island. As one of the steps they have taken in this regard, the council decided to fine those who decide to give up residency at the island an administrative fee of MVR 5000.
In a statement released by the LGA, they said that any constitutional rights of the people cannot be withheld to any degree unless through the passing of a law by the parliament.
LGA further noted that the Decentralization Act also specifies that citizens can take up residency in any island without facing any discrimination.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih declared Thinadhoo as a city during the presidential election campaigns in August last year. He made this decision despite Thinadhoo not having a population of ten thousand.
In order to grant Thinadhoo, with a population of 6000, the status of a city, some amendments need to be brought to the law. The parliament is currently undertaking this work, with the assurance of the current government that they will cooperate with the efforts.
