The government is working on the development of Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Thinadhoo with the intention of giving it the status of a city, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said.
The President, while on his campaign trail for the upcoming primary elections to be held this Saturday, said the 100 housing units initially allocated for the island will be changed to 200 units and the council will soon announce the allocation of land from the reclaimed area of the island.
"Road development is underway. The drainage system is being installed. The power plant is being built. I can read an entire list," he said.
He said that Thinadhoo is an important island in the development policy of this government. All the facilities needed to turn it into a city will be established in the island, he said. These include the construction of an international commercial port, an airport near Thinadhoo and a tertiary hospital, the President said.
"In terms of tourism, the atoll has the best islands for tourism development. What is required are facilities. That is why we have started work to establish an international airport, a commercial port, basic services and health services here," he said.
