The campaign venue where Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate and current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was scheduled to address the locals of Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Madaveli was set on fire on Monday evening, August 7.
The fire caused significant damage to the chairs and other items that had been arranged at the venue situated at the northern end of the island.
President Solih is presently on an official visit to the islands of Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaal atolls. He was scheduled to land in Madaveli around 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, August 8.
Following the destruction of the initial campaign venue, the rally has been relocated to a new location near Madaveli harbor.
"Apart from the arson incident, there has been no other unrest on the island," said an MDP supporter from the area.
However, he said that members of the main opposition party, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), were preparing to stage a protest upon President Solih's arrival.
The island is recognized for having a higher number of PPM supporters in comparison to the ruling party, MDP.
