The man arrested in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Madaveli after he dragged a woman across the street has been sentenced to be jail until the end of his trial.
According to the police, when the man, who was arrested on Tuesday, was taken to the magistrate court to determine his remand custody, the court ruled that he would be jailed until his trial was over.
The 33-year-old man, identified as Ali, had beaten up a woman from another island who had moved there to be with him.
The woman was taken to the local hospital for the injuries she sustained during the attack. However, after her safety was ensured, the woman was sent away from the island.
In a video that went viral on social media, it can be seen that the woman was dragged from a house and beaten publicly. Later, the man held her hair, and she was dragged across the road as well. While she was being dragged, every once in a while the man punched her in the face and head.
Mihaaru news reported that the people on the island claimed that she had gone to the island to marry the man who had beaten her. Even before this incident, the woman had been relocated to the home of one of the man's relatives because he was abusive to her.
The police are now investigating the matter.
