The island council of Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Hoandehdhoo has said that the 20-ton water supplied by Fenaka Corporation was insufficient and the island was in need of additional supplies.
Fenaka Corporation had supplied and stored the water in its Hoandehdhoo branch on Thursday last week, after a request was made by the council nearly a month ago.
Hussain Waarish, the president of the island council, stated that the water provision by Fenaka Corporation would last the island for just one week. "We requested 50 tons of water," Waarish commented, reflecting on the council's request sent on March 26, 2023.
Due to the delays from Fenaka to supply water, the Hoandehdhoo council had publicly announced seeking interested parties to supply water to the island. Waarish said that a private association had donated 300 cases of mineral water following the announcement.
“We are currently working to bring the 300 cases of water from Malé via sea. Another party has also affirmed their commitment to provide funding for us to purchase more water,” he added.
The island has a total population of 1,340, with approximately 900 locals currently residing there.
