Maldives Civil Court has rejected the plea filed by the family of deceased Abdulla Rasheed, requesting against conducting post-mortem.

Rasheed died while under the custody of Maldives Police Service. The incident has directed wide-scale public criticism at the authority alleging negligence and misconduct.

The deceased was arrested previous week as a person of interest tied to a drug-related case. Rasheed was taken into custody from Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Hoandehdhoo.

Moments after he was taken under custody, the deceased had reportedly complained about intense chest pains. Officials had allegedly denied medical attention for Rasheed, claiming the suspect was "feigning sickness."

Following Rasheed's demise, National Integrity Commission launched an investigation into Maldives Police to ascertain police negligence, due to which the authority is seeking post-mortem, his family however, has objected to it.

Preliminary hearing on the lodged case of Rasheed's family took place on October 29, Saturday. At the hearing, the deceased's legal representatives argued Rasheed's post-mortem was rather a pretext to probe for his culpability in the drug case. His legal advocates argued the post-mortem for the drug case was unlawful.

The case is jointly investigated by both National Integrity Commission and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
