Five charged over possession of 149kg of drugs

Five suspects were charged over the possession of 149 kilograms of narcotics which were found in a recent drug bust in Hulhuvaarulu, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that last week, four people were convicted of trafficking diamorphine, and one was found guilty by association.

Trafficking of diamorphine carries a fine between MVR 100,000 and MVR 10 million, as well as life imprisonment.

Among the convicted, one was already sentenced to life in prison.

The 100 kilograms of heroin and 49 kilograms of cannabis seized in Hulhuvaarulu have a street value of up to MVR 260 million.

Intelligence information led the police to conduct a 72-hour operation to locate the drugs. Suspected traffickers and vessels used were later identified.

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed, the following Monday, revealed the record bust at a function held to mark the 86th anniversary of Maldives Police Service.

Those charged are Ahmed Khaleel 42, from Gadhdhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Shafeez Mohamed, 35, and Ahmed Anil, 34, both from Kondey, Gaafu Alif Atoll, Ali Shakir, 30, from Nilandhoo, Gaafu Alif Atoll, and Yaamih Haleedh, 23 from Gadhdhoo, Alif Dhaalu Atoll.
