High Court of Maldives had ordered on Sunday to jail the President of Gaafu Dhaalu Gaddhoo Council Mohamed Ahmed again.
Mohamed Ahmed ran for the President of Gaddhoo Council on a PPM ticket. He won the seat in the Local Council Election held on April 10, while he was kept in jail custody until a child abuse case against him was completed in court. However, after he won the seat of Council President, Gaddhoo Court had ordered that he should be released. Last week, he even took the administrative oath and was sworn into office.
When the state appealed Mohamed Ahmed's case, High Court had nulled Gaddhoo Council's decision.
Elections Commission (EC) received a lot of criticism for allowing Mohamed Ahmed to run for office in the first place considering the allegations against him. However, as allegations are still not proven, his candidacy could not be revoked, EC had said. Candidacy can be revoked only if the candidate has a case that was proven against them in court.
