Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, who is part of the legal team representing former President Abdulla Yameen, has confirmed that Yameen will participate in the second round of elections scheduled for this month.

Yameen, who is currently serving an 11 year prison sentence for bribery and money laundering did not vote during the first round of the presidential elections.

A ballot box was set up in Maafushi jail to allow inmates to cast their votes. However, the former President did not re-register to vote at that location.

Jameel, who conveyed National Day greetings to the people on behalf of Yameen in a tweet on Saturday, also mentioned that arrangements have now been made for Yameen to vote in the second round of the presidential election, even though such arrangements were not facilitated during the first round.

Yameen submitted a candidacy form to run in this year's presidential election. However, the Elections Commission (EC) rejected his candidacy due to his ongoing jail sentence. Despite an appeal to the Supreme Court, the Court upheld the decision, barring Yameen from contesting in the elections. As a result, the opposition selected Mayor of Malé City, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, as their presidential candidate.

Dr. Muizzu received 101,494 votes in the first round of the presidential election while President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih received 86,166 votes.
