MMC President Shahubaan accused of money laundering, no plans to resign

President of Maldives Media Council (MMC) Shahubaan Fahmy said on Monday that money laundering accusations does not mean he is a criminal and he does not intend from resigning as president.

Police have sent summons to Shahubaan to the police station on Wednesday evening for questioning over charges of money laundering. His brother, former MP Alhan Fahmy, was also ordered to appear for questioning on Tuesday for the same charges.

In an interview given to Mihaaru news, Shahubaan said that Maldivian law do not equate allegations to being a convicted criminal. He said that until he is proven guilty of the crime, he does not intent to step down from the elected position of president of an independent body in Maldives.

"It is another issue if I am dismissed from my position as per the rules and regulations of the council or by the council members. But there are no plans to step down [to resign] in connection with the allegations," he said.

Regarding the accusations he said the company have not done any illegal activity. He highlighted that there are no lawful regulation regarding trading in Maldives.

"We have not conducted any illegal activity. No laws in Maldives state Forex trading is prohibited."

He had said that their work has now been halted and their existing agreements with their partners have been suspended as well.

Alhan Fahmy has stated that this is a defamation ploy against him by a group of people.

Alhan has currently stopped his investment scheme and has said that he is working towards paying back all investors.
