The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has decided to appeal the MVR 10,000 fine placed on them over contempt of court in the High Court's judicial assembly, after the court refused to accept the appeal case PGO had filed with them.

The PGO was fined MVR 10,000 by Seenu atoll Feydhoo Magistrate Court over their refusal to comply with the court’s order to release the criminal records of witnesses brought forward by the state.

When this case was appealed in the High Court by the PGO, the court had previously decided not to accept this case. PGO said on Thursday they have decided to appeal this case with the High Court's judicial assembly.

High Court regulations state if a party petitioning a case with them is not satisfied with the registrar’s decision, the have the opportunity to file a case with their judicial assembly.

This is the first time action has been taken against PGO over contempt of court.
