President has decided to lower WAMCO's waste disposal truck fee to MVR 500

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced on Sunday his decision to reduce the fee charged by Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO)'s truck for garbage disposal services from the current amount of MVR 750 to MVR 500.

Speaking at the campaign event of the candidate contending in the parliamentary elections under People's National Congress (PNC)'s ticket, President Muizzu remarked that the fee amount of MVR 750 that is required to be settled for garbage disposal in small pickups is an increasing burden for the people.

He revealed that the State has determined to lower to MVR 500 following deliberations with senior officials of WAMCO.

"I have now negotiated with senior officials of WAMCO as well. The State will lower this MVR 750 charged to MVR 500. They (WAMCO) will also officially announce this without much delay," the President declared at the campaign ceremony held in Hulhumale' City.

"Once waste begins being disposed at this rate, people with low income will be offered a significant ease."

While the administration has settled on downsizing the fee extracted for waste disposal through WAMCO, the streets of Male' City have been notably filled up with trash since the beginning of Ramadan. With the spiraling of waste dumped unlawfully on the city roads, Male' City Council and WAMCO, together with the Maldives Police Service had collaborated efforts into resolving the growing issue.

However, disposal of waste outside the streets remained unresolved and photos of people dumping garbage onto these alleyways are also being circulated publicly. Over a 100 individuals have been fined for littering in the city thus far.

In order to end the act of littering, WAMCO had even offered their waste disposal services for free within the city of Male' and Hulhumale' for three consecutive days.
