Male' City Council Mayor Adam Azim has stated that the issue of garbage dumping on the roads of Male' City will be addressed within the next four months by increasing the capacity of the city council.

Male' has been left a dump after increased disposal of garbage following the cleaning of households for the month of Ramadan. Major roads and streets are cluttered with old discarded furniture and other household items.

Speaking at a press conference held by the Male' City Council in front of Fathaha Mall on Maaveyo Magu, which has faced the worst of the garbage dumping, Mayor Azim stated that the City Council has been actively collecting garbage in Male' for the past two weeks.

"No employee of Male' City Council has remained idle. Approximately 10 tonnes of garbage are being collected every day. WAMCO is also collecting around the same amount of garbage. In total, around 20 tonnes of garbage are being collected from different parts of Male' every single day," he said.

To address the issue of garbage dumping, there is a need to increase the capacity of Male' City Council, WAMCO, and the police.

"We are working towards capacity building and expansion. Hiring additional staff and procuring vehicles are necessary for capacity building. Various required software must be obtained. This issue cannot be solved within just one month," the Mayor added.

"I have highlighted that time is needed to build capacity. It will take three to four months to achieve this. After that, you will not see garbage on Male' roads," Azim said.

Azim said that it was evident no agency was prepared for the issue of garbage dumping in Male' City. He emphasized the need for preparedness to prevent a recurrence of this problem in the future.

"I assure you today that within the next two to three months, when you [citizens] call, there will be a proper arrangement for garbage collection established with a separate charge for the service."

Azim said that the pickups collecting garbage take undue advantage by charging different rates. He added that different people are quoted different rates, resulting in the collection of garbage at high prices.

The Mayor assured that the Male' City Council will establish garbage collection services for the convenience of the people.
