One kidnapped and tortured in Male'

Police have said that an individual was kidnapped in Male' city, and subjected to torture, with one finger having been cut off.

Three Maldivian men have been arrested in relation to this case, including an 18 year old.

When presented at Criminal Court for their remand hearing yesterday, the court ruled that the three be held in remand in custody until the end of trial.

As per the information submitted to court by the Police, including photographic evidence, the victim had one finger cut off.

The victim is a colleague of the three suspects. Reasons behind the kidnapping and torture is so far unknown.

All three denied the charges.

The three denied having kidnapped the victim, and said they had not deliberately inflicted violence on the victim. They claimed that his finger had been cut off while using a powertool.

However, the court order states that photographs submitted by the Police clearly show that the victim had been subjected to physical violence.

The three are accused of violence with a sharp object and detaining a person illegally.
