The committee's agenda now includes the Debt Bill and the Fiscal Responsibility Bill.
Parliament's Public Account's Committee meeting with Monetary Authority of Maldives (MMA) Governor Ali Hashim has been removed from today's agenda.
The committee had scheduled to summon Governor Ali Hashim at 11:00 hrs today, along with Deputy Governor Ahmed Imad and Assistant Governor Idham Hussain.
However, this item has now been removed from the agenda.
The committee's agenda now includes the Debt Bill and the Fiscal Responsibility Bill.
The decision to summon Governor Hashim was initially made when the committee recommended his removal to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
According to the Maldives Monetary Authority Act, the Governor and Deputy Governor of the Authority shall be appointed and dismissed by the President on the recommendation of the Parliament. Parliament Deputy Speaker and Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim submitted the motion to initiate the process of removing Ali Hashim from his post under that article.
Nazim said that the central bank had failed to achieve the objectives outlined in the Maldives Monetary Authority Act, especially at a time when the Maldives' economy is in distress. He said that the monetary policy, which is one of the foundations of MMA, is not functioning properly.
Nazim added that Governor Hashim has not undertaken any responsibilities of his role since this government came into power and that he has not offered any counsel to the government thus far.
