Two people were arrested after CCTV footage showed them both burglarising Jalaaludheen Mosque in Malé City. Malé City Council has established CCTV cameras in all the mosques with 24 hour surveillance.
Malé City Mayor Dr Mohamed Muizzu, affirmed in a tweet about the burglary as seen from the camera footage, however did not mention what they were trying to steal.
He urged citizens to be more respectful towards places of worship and to work together in creating harmony.
The council has set up cameras in 39 mosques including VilliMalé, in addition to the parks.
It was vowed by the council to make public spaces more secure and setting up the CCTV cameras was in line with it. With 24 hour surveillance, the council aims to ensure the safety of the communities living in the Malé area and to take action accordingly if there are suspicious acts.
Malé City Council has also stated previously that the work has been carried forth with assistance from the police.
