Criminal Court sentences woman to 17 years in jail for the killing her four year old child with a knife. The blood money set for this crime is MVR 1 million.
In February 2016, Aminath Shahidha from Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll killed her daughter while she was asleep. This incident happened in Noomaraa, also in the same atoll. Criminal Court had ruled her guilty of this crime last month.
Shahidha’s trial and sentence was conducted in a closed hearing. She received her sentence on June 15.
The child’s heirs initially told the court that they did not want to collect the blood money from this crime. They later changed their mind. According to Islamic law, parents cannot be charged with murder for their children.
Police have not disclosed why Shahidha killed her own child. However, they have said she was getting treatment then for mental health issues.
