President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that under the current administration's special initiative to ensure Maldives' food security, agricultural work will be developed in Gaafu Alif Kondey, as well as other islands that have sufficient space for such activities.

In his trip to the southern atolls, the President visited Kondey yesterday afternoon. Speaking to residents of the island, he emphasized that Kondey is an island with the potential to engage in agricultural activities on a large scale, revealing that the government has compiled a plan to put this into motion.

"One of the most important economic policies of this administration is to strengthen the agricultural industry," he said.

The President highlighted that it is a key component of the government's policies to ensure food security through increasing local production of feasible items of food.

"So, if this work is done in the Maldives, there is an important need for the land of this island. For the future of the island's residents, and this is something that will increase the income of a large number of residents manyfold," the President explained.

"Our intention is to bring agricultural investments like we said to this island, other such islands with large land areas, as well as other islands which are even currently engaged in agricultural activities," he shared.

Kondey has one of the largest land areas amongst the inhabited islands of Maldives. The island's size is 116 hectares.

The President assured that agricultural activities in Kondey will commence soon, and will be conducted through collaboration with the island council and residents.

Besides agricultural activities, the President also pledged to solve issues faced by the residents of Kondey. This includes expansion of the harbour, repairing the school building, development of the health centre, resolving issues faced in electricity services, setting up ATM services, and introducing a housing scheme.
