North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim submitted the motion today, with it being accepted to parliament through the unanimous votes of the 61 members in attendance.
MP Ibrahim said that the public had voiced concerns about the inordinately higher charges on April's electricity bill, taking to social media to share the differences with past bills and questioning the reasons behind it. He noted that with this outcry, STELCO had offered some concessions.
He said that that the bills that followed after this were even higher, resulting in the public once again voicing concerns.
Ibrahim pointed out that while the bills are rising, the details of the charges are not available to the public, adding that even in the instances where details were provided, the bills had been generated based on averages.
The motion called to investigate the issue of rising bills from STELCO and Fenaka, and implored that the details of this be shared with the public.
Responding to concerns shared on social media, STELCO has said that customers can view the usage and charges at any time. In April, when the complaints peaked, STELCO maintained that the bill amounts had increased as a result of the extremely warm weather during that time.
STELCO assures that they do not charge beyond the electricity usage.
