The academic calendar for the new academic year which begins on May 26 has been made to conclude on March next year, with the extended second term holidays falling into the month of Ramadan.

According to the first draft of the academic calendar released by the Ministry of Education, the new academic year will end and the holidays will begin on February 23 next year, lasting through until March 6. The draft detailed the first day of school as March 5 and the beginning of the 2025 academic year as March 6.

However, the final calendar issued to schools by the Ministry stated that the first term of the upcoming academic year will end on September 26 and the holidays will last from September 29 until October 3.

The study of the second term will commence on October 6 and end on March 6 next year with March 9 through April 3 determined as the year end holidays. The academic year of 2025 is set to begin on April 6 while the date for teachers to begin their duties have been allocated for April 3.

The 2025 calendar reveals that the month of Ramadan falls onto February 26 next year. While the last ten days of Ramadan will be established as holidays similar to this year, students were given the long-term holidays with these days incorporated into the holiday as well. This is from March 21 to April 2.

The government has decided to entirely reset the beginning of the academic year back to January starting from the year 2026. Moreover, the State had also assured that schools will be provided the long-term holidays in December next year accordingly with the time old practice.

For many years previously, the academic new year has always been begun in Maldives during the month of January. However, with the closing of schools owing to the threat of Covid-19 and appeals by a large number of people in the tourism industry, the government had changed the mark of a new school year from January to August in 2021.

This change was enforced after extending studies of that academic year from a period of one year to one and a half years.

Many had expressed dissatisfaction with this decision enforced by the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Returning to the usual practice of establishing January as the beginning of the new school year is a presidential vow by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
