The biggest predicament in Maldives today is bribes from tycoons, proclaimed former President Mohamed Nasheed on Friday.

Speaking to his supporters in Dhidhdhoo during his visit to Haa Alif Atoll, Nasheed declared that bribery attempts by magnates was the reason behind the aggravation of judicial, legislative and government functioning. He stated that shuffling people in positions of authority does not solve the issue as long as such tycoons are not stopped.

Claiming that such bribes are offered as a means of attaining greater wealth, Nasheed stressed that these moguls must stand corrected.

"The culprit I can see today is not the judge, but rather the tycoon. We must not forget that."

Nasheed said that the sources and manner of moguls' incomes must be made transparent, in order to improve the state of affairs.

Acknowledging the Maldives National Day, which is celebrated to commemorate the victory of national hero Muhammad Thakurufaanu over the Portuguese occupation in the year 1573, Nasheed proclaimed that it was the efforts of the people of Haa Alif and Haa Dhaal which saved the country from an authoritarian rule.

He stated that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and its coalition partners are working to establish an independent and prosperous nation, and that the government of President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will bring about the progress desired by the Maldivian people.

Further referring to the apex court's stay order on his 13-year jail conviction on terrorism charges, Nasheed said that it was the people that gifted him the opportunity to return to the country as a free man with his family.

Asserting that though he desired no post in the government, Nasheed vowed to remain in service to the people.
