Velaa issues MVR 72000 per staff as January service charge

At the end of January, every employee of Velaa Private Island has received USD 4693 (MVR 72366) as service charges for the month.

One of the leading resorts of the Maldives, Velaa Private Island resort has issued USD 4693 (MVR 72366) to each staff member as service charge earnings for the month. The total amount the resort will be distributing as service charges is USD 1.4 million (MVR 22 million).

Velaa is the resort that received the highest amount of service charge in January.

With approximately 50 rooms, the resort employees about 300 members of staff.

As per the numbers published on the facebook page of Resort Workers Maldives, the resort employees that received the second highest amount as service charges are those from Fari Islands, Ritz-Carlton Maldives.

There, each staff received USD 4,283 (MVR 66,000) as service charges. The resort has 750 members of staff, indicating that their total earnings as service charge in January amount to USD 3.2 million (MVR 50 million).

At third place on the list is the staff at Cheval Blanc Randheli Resort. Here, each staff received USD 3525 (MVR 54,000).

10. Joali Being : USD 1,552 (MVR 23,932)

January has consistently been the calendar month in which resorts earn the highest service charge. A large number of resorts issued over USD 1000 as service charges last month.

The law now stipulates that a ten percent service charge be applied at all tourist facilities across the country. In the instance service charge is not issued to an employee, the Labour Relations Authority reserves the right to fine the employee with an amount not exceeding MVR 500,000.
