Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group (PG) leader Mohamed Aslam has said that though President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih requested against interrupting the oath-taking ceremony of Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the party's consensus is against participating in the ceremony.
MDP PG earlier said the party would not accept Dr. Muizzu's oath-taking without first addressing the no-confidence motion of Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. The party added that the president's oath-taking should take place in the presence of a Speaker accepted by the parliament.
Although Tuesday's parliament sitting had budget resolutions on agenda, MDP intervened the proceedings.
While speaking to press after the ruling party's protests inside the parliament chamber on Tuesday, Aslam said President Solih does not accept any attempts on interrupting Dr. Muizzu's oath-taking.
"[President Solih] said it was inappropriate, and that he does endorse attempts to interrupt [the oath-taking], I relayed his message to other members of the parliamentary group as well," Aslam said.
"We do not believe it is a lawful ceremony. But even if we do not go out to protest, we may boycott [the ceremony," Aslam added.
"We still have the spirit to do certain things at the ceremony, but the parliamentary group has not decided on it."
Though Aslam noted the party's plan to boycott Dr. Muizzu's oath-taking ceremony, the parliament's quorum would be achieved even in the absence of the 55 MPs from MDP.
Aslam also stressed the ruling party will not relent about Nasheed's no-confidence, and they are waiting for Supreme Court's decision on the matter.
