Maldives Customs Service has seized illicit narcotics worth over MVR 2 million smuggled through Maldives Post.
The drugs were concealed in a package shipped from the Netherlands. The authorities confiscated it after inspecting the package for suspicious content.
The package contained heroin and mephedrone, a synthetic amphetamine.
The drugs reportedly weighed 1.34 kilograms, with a street value of MVR 2,049,000. The substances were confiscated by local authorities on November 20, 2022.
There has been a trend of smuggling of narcotic substances, especially amphetamines, through postal services. The Ministry of Health has also warned that methamphetamine use has increased in the Maldives.
