Environment Minister calls for action over environmental protection and development

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Ms. Aminath Shauna has highlighted on the importance of environmental protection against pollution.

In her speech, Ms. Shauna related environmental preservation with the economic development of Maldives.

Moreover, she had confirmed on several initiatives under various phases carried out towards the cause under the current administration.

Ms. Shauna stressed on the environmental impact rising from improper waste disposal, and she also noted on the challenges local islands face in effectively destroying waste material.

However, she had pointed on various initiatives carried out by the government to combat these issues which includes development of regional waste management centers in three different zones of the island nation.

"Our aim is to develop waste management centers in all residential islands of Maldives, that will allow for effective waste disposal and management at a more residential level," Ms. Shauna commented.

Furthermore, she confirms the decision to categorically separate waste from Male' residences, was another move towards realizing effective waste disposal.

Under the policies that limits single-use plastics, a total of 13 different types of plastic will be fully banned which will result in a drastic reduction of plastic wastage across residential islands.

Ms. Shauna had also highlighted on the single-use plastic face-out plan, which was initiated in a bid to reduce waste disposed to the house reefs of residential islands.

"Hopefully we will be able to fully ban these 13 types of plastics from usage in the Maldives by 2023," she affirmed.

The Environment Minister had further stressed on the importance of public support in combatting environmental pollution and waste increment.

The government has also effectively preserved 79 environmentally rich areas that are known for its ecosystems.
