President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih declared 'Farikede Faru', an eco-rich marine site in Fuvahmulah, as a protected area on Tuesday.
According to the President's Office, the president granted the protected area status to Farikede Faru under Article 4 of the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act of Maldives (Act No: 4/93) and the Administration’s Strategic Action Plan.
He made the decision after deliberations on a paper presented by the Ministry of Environment, at a Cabinet sitting Tuesday morning.
The marine site rich in biodiversity features the famed Thresher Point of Fuvahmulah, which is frequented by two species of thresher sharks: the bigeye thresher shark (Alopias superciliosus) and common thresher shark (Alopias vulpinus). Farikede Faru is also a hot spot for other pelagic visitors such as whale sharks, oceanic manta rays, and ocean sunfish.
The president previously granted protected area status to 11 eco-rich sites in the atolls of Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani and Noonu on June 15, 2019.
