Athhar died in hospital while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital after an attempt to take his own life while in custody at Dhoonidhoo prison. He had been arrested for holding a woman hostage at knifepoint.
Police sent the body of Athhar to India to conduct a post mortem last Friday to determine the cause of death.
A Police Media Official confirmed that Athhar's body will be brought back to Maldives today. They said that details would be shared once the autopsy results are received.
Athhar's funeral is scheduled to be held at 22:00 hrs tonight at the Hulhumale' cemetery.
