Maldives Police Service on Tuesday arrested a man who swam from the isolation facility at Fun Island Resort to Olhuveli Beach and Spa Resort.

He was taken into police custody from the waters around Olhuveli Beach and Spa Resort.

Police revealed that the 20-year-old male, an employee of Olhuveli Beach and Spa Resort, swam there from the isolation facility to buy cigarettes.

According to authorities, Maafushi Magistrate Court remanded the suspect for a period of 15 days.

Police are currently investigating the matter.

While Maldives is currently under a state of public health emergency over the global COVID-19 pandemic, authorities have instructed the public to follow a certain set of rules to contain the spread of the virus within the community.

Those who violate the state's instructions will be arrested for endangering public health.

Since, police have arrested six individuals for violating the instructions of the Director General of Public Health.

Maldives currently counts 13 confirmed cases of COVID-19, of which 10 are active cases. The country reported its first two recoveries on Friday, and a third on Saturday.

No Maldivians have tested positive for the virus as of yet. So far, only tourists and resort employees have confirmed infections with no local transmissions.

The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected more than 409,040 and claimed over 18,262 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 107,073 have recovered.
