National Archives of Maldives has decided to file a case with the Maldives Police Services asking them to investigate and take action against Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) for destroying paperwork without notifying the offices of the Archives.

"Any documents of the State or a State owned company must only be disposed of in the ways outlined in the National Archives Act," Director General of National Archives, Mohamed Amir stated.

"We were not previously aware that this was being done. So now what we are looking into is whether their disposal contravenes the law," he explained.

A still from a video circulating on social media showing the destroying of FSM documents.

Deliberate destruction to or of archived documents carry a fine between MVR 10,000 to MVR 100,000, or a prison sentence of 5 to 10 years.

Anti-Corruption Commission has also called on the Police and the Privatization and Corporatization Board to bring to a halt the act of destroying documents in government offices and companies.

Ahmed Anees, a meter technician at FSM who released on social media the video of paperwork being destroyed, has been suspended from his duties.

FSM has meanwhile claimed that the documents being seen disposed of are old and nugatory paperwork which have been stored for many years in warehouses.
