In an interview on State media, the Speaker said that the President is elected through the votes of the entire country's population, while a member of parliament is chosen through votes amongst 5000 or so people in a constituency.
While this is so, the Parliament has the powers of impeaching a President under certain procedures, but there are no provisions in the Constitution for the removal of an MP, he said.
"I do not believe it fits with the times to have the option to remove the person in the highest elected position, and yet have no way of removing those in lesser elected positions," Abdul Raheem said.
Abdul Raheem stated that it is his belief that there should be an option to remove an MP from his position by the constituents, or another entity, if they are seen to not properly represent the people's interests or if the constituents are not satisfied with their service.
