The Supreme Court of the Maldives is reviewing a High Court verdict that declined to place on remand the unconvicted suspects in the murder of Nadheem Ibrahim, who was stabbed to death inside a café in Malé City in July 2017.
The state raised charges against G. Sharaz Mohamed Mafaz, L. Gan Thundi Avashu Vidhaathari Ali Nifaz, R. Innamaadhoo Samantha Hussain Saamin and GA. Gemanafushi Havaas Mohamed Karam Suhail as suspects in the murder. The Criminal Court verdict of not guilty afforded to these men has been appealed at the High Court.
When the state requested a detention order for the suspects until a final verdict was reached, the High Court stated they could not do so. The state then appealed to the Supreme Court, which yesterday decided to accept the case.
However, hearings in the case are yet to begin.
The High Court held that there was no law or regulation to detain such persons during the appeal process.
