Civil Court ruled on Tuesday that they are unable to pursue the case filed with them regarding collecting the fine of USD 5 million (MVR 77 million) issued against former President Abdulla Yameen.

Criminal Court had fined Yameen with the USD 5 million fine in addition to an 11 year prison sentence over the bribery and money laundering charges regarding the lease of Vaavu atoll Aarah during his presidency in December of 2022. As the case is currently appealed in the High Court, the higher court had ordered to pause the collection of the fine until the matter is settled.

However, since the state had filed with the Civil Court to collect the fine issued against Yameen, the Civil Court said in a ruling made yesterday that they are unable to collect the fine at the moment due to High Court's order.

The hearings for appeal case filed by Yameen’s legal team with the High Court is almost done, with a verdict to be made soon.

Even though Yameen has a prison sentence, he is currently detained in his home due to his health.
