The Maldives government has condemned the act of tearing Islamic sacred scripture, the Holy Quran in the Netherlands.

Multiple incidents of desecrating the Islamic holy book were reported outside embassies in The Hague on September 23, Saturday.

The ministry in its statement said that the repeated and public acts of the desecration of the Holy Quran "cannot be justified under the guise of freedom of speech and expression."

The Maldives government also said that the states need to adopt national laws, policies and law enforcement frameworks that "address, prevent, and prosecute" acts and advocacy of religious hatred that leads to discrimination or violence.

The ministry further raised concerns over the increasing number of incidents of religious intolerance, negative stereotyping, hatred, and violence against Muslims.

Maldives called to end such abhorrent acts against Islam, and added that concerted global action was necessary to combat the rise of Islamophobia and hate speech.

While the Maldives has condemned the act, Arab League nations like Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have also denounced the incident.
