A man has been sentenced to nine months in house arrest for fraudulently obtaining money under the guise of raising funds for a child's surgical procedure.

The man replicated a social media appeal posted originally by the child's family seeking donations for a three month old's surgery in 2020 and reposting it after replacing the account number. He obtained over MVR 2,000 from people in this manner.

He was tried in Haa Dhaal atoll Kulhudhufushi court for the offence of fraud. While pleading guilty to the charges, the man requested that he be placed under house arrest instead of a jail sentence. Consequently, the court sentenced him to nine months and 18 days of house arrest.

While the offense calls for a prison sentence of four months and 24 days, the duration was increased when the judge allowed for house arrest instead during the sentencing.

There have formerly been multiple cases where offenders have been sentenced to jail or placed under house arrest in cases of obtaining money through fraudulent means.
