Households in Addu City have suffered damages due to swell waves crashing into the island. While the walls of two houses in Hithadhoo collapsed during the swell surge, one other house had also suffered notable damages.
Three houses in Hithadhoo, Addu City have suffered significant damages due to strong swell waves.
Member of the Hithadhoo Council, Ibrahim Shinaz stated the incident that occurred this afternoon had collapsed the wall of two houses; Evening Park and Orkham Village in the district. He added that another house in the same area, Hulhudhoo Aage has also been affected by the swell waves.
Shinaz attributed the cause of the wall collapse to the delayed Hithadhoo Shore Protection Project, which had been initiated by the former government.
"This work is being is being carried out by MTCC (Maldives Transport and Contracting Company). A large portion of the work has now been completed. No houses have suffered any damages from the area where the work was completed. Houses in the uncompleted area are the ones that incurred damages," he explained.
He further revealed that deliberations are currently underway with MTCC to identify a temporary solution to the issue of swell waves.
"Just now, a little while ago, a State Minister of the Construction Ministry (Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure) called and said that MTCC has now been notified via letter to resume the Addu Shore Protection project. Therefore, the work will begin very soon," Shinaz said.
Hithadhoo Shore Protection Project consists of adding 6,891 cubic meters of sand will be be added over the beaches, dredging the 95 cubic meter swimming area, reinforcing 100 meters to the outer sea wall and reinforcing the geotextile tube structure in an area of 570 meters.
While MTCC has been appointed the contractor of this project by the Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure, this project is valued at MVR 11.64 million.
