The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) renews commitment of preserving Baa atoll among its Biosphere Reserves for another 10 years.
UNESCO assigns its biospheres for a period of 10 years after which it holds the discretion to extend the commitment for another period depending of necessity for preservation of ecosystems.
Meanwhile, the UNESCO Biosphere's secretariat in Baa atoll announced that the international organization officially confirmed renewal of its commitment for another decade on June 17, Friday.
The atoll was listed under UNESCO's biosphere reserves first on June 28, 2011 due to its rich ecosystem.
Earlier, the UNESCO secretariat in Baa atoll had extended necessary documents to the organization in September 2021 requesting UNESCO to extend its commitment to preserve the atoll.
The documents include an ecological survey with details of preserved house reefs and other land and marine ecosystem information, shared with UNESCO.
