Minister of Gender and Family has revealed that seven children under state care were fostered last year, and 20 children were returned to their families.
The gender ministry had created a foster panel in 2017 in order to grant the opportunity for children under state care to grow up with families, and in turn, allowing local families to adopt these children.
As such, two girls under the age of three, and five boys were handed over to three families that submitted the adoption forms last year, and four families that had filed the papers in previous years.
The ministry had received seven applications for fostering last year, and the panel had rejected one application, while another one was withdrawn. The panel is still reviewing two more applications for fostering, gender ministry’s report stated.
Meanwhile, seven girls and 13 boys under the age of 18, were returned to their families from foster care, according to the report. They were returned after the ministry ran assessments to see if the families had a conductive environment to take back the children.
Currently, there are over 80 children under state care in the facility in Villimale. The fostering programme initiated by the ministry aims to give a “loving home” to these children by conferring their legal guardianship to the fostering families.
