A joint team from FIFA and AFC will be sent to the Maldives to identify the issues that have come to light in the run-up to the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) election.

This was conveyed to FAM in a letter sent by FIFA and the AFC instructing to postpone the elections, which were previously scheduled for April 20.

Acting General Secretary of FAM, Mohamed Jaushan Shareef, stated that FIFA and AFC have indicated they will send a delegation to the Maldives to assess the current situation.

"The joint letter sent by FIFA and AFC indicated that a joint team from FIFA and AFC will be sent to the Maldives," Jaushan said.

He said that he did not know the exact date of the team's arrival.

"They can come anytime," he said.

The delegation will meet with clubs and government agencies. Previously, joint teams from FIFA and AFC have visited Maldives to assess the situation when issues had cropped up.

When a no-confidence motion was filed against FAM President Bassam Adeel Jaleel in 2019, a team from FIFA and AFC visited the Maldives to assess the situation. They met with the clubs during their visit.

During the delegation's meetings with clubs who had allegedly signed Bassam's no-confidence motion, some clubs had denied and said that they had not signed the motion at all.

The FIFA delegation concluded that the motion was invalid, resulting in the decision that the congress could not proceed.
