A case has been sent to the Prosecutor General's Office over the President's Office neglecting to comply with a decision reached by Information Commissioner's Office of Maldives (iCOM).

Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem shared with Mihaaru News today that iCOM has filed a case at the PG Office and revealed that it has now been sent to the police for investigation.

The Right to Information Act (Act No: 1/2014) stipulates that if 45 days elapse without complying nor appealing to a decision reached by the Information Commissioner, the Commission may lodge the case at the PG Office and request to send the matter to a judicial court.

While the number of RTI requests (Rights to Information) submitted in accordance with the law has drastically increased, most of these requests were lodged at the President's Office. Many complains have also been raised on the institution failing to provide the requested information or neglecting the request beyond the deadline without a word.

While these complaints are also being raised with iCOM, the President's Office had failed to attend most hearings held by the commission, further requesting to adjourn the hearings several times as well.

Concerns are being raised on the matter and Information Commissioner Ahmed Ahid Rasheed asserted that the President's Office had failed to comply with an order of the commission, revealing that a consensus has been reached to request a formal investigation.

Spokesperson of the President's Office, Heena Waleed had reiterated that the policy of the office is to distribute information in the most transparent manner. She had also assured earlier that the requested information will be divulged soon.
