Former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed has announced that he will be running for the Malé City Mayoral seat.

In a Facebook post, Hussain Waheed announced his candidacy in the mayoral elections planned by the Elections Commission (EC) before January 17, 2024 and asked for support, love and prayers from the public.

He said that the announcement was made in response to a large number of queries from the public.

Hussain Waheed currently fills the position of CEO at Channel 13.

Hussain Waheed left the post of Police Commissioner in 2015, following the explosion on former President Abdulla Yameen's speedboat. After his removal as CP, he was appointed as a State Minister at the housing ministry. This was followed by a State Ministerial position at the youth ministry.

Hussain Waheed continued working at the youth ministry until the end of Yameen's administration.

The Malé Mayoral seat elections are planned to be held due to the vacancy of the post after the current Malé City Mayor, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, contested in and won September's presidential election. Dr. Muizzu, who will be sworn in on November 17, is currently on leave from his mayoral position.

Minister of youth and sports, Ahmed Mahloof, has also previously announced his candidacy for the post of Malé Mayor.
