Home minister Azleen Ahmed Wednesday accused former Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef of plotting to bring a certain individual to power.
Speaking at the 85th anniversary of police celebration ceremony, the home minister said that Areef’s preparations to enforce the “unconstitutional” Supreme Court ruling on February 1 to release several high-profile political detainees were in efforts to bring a certain individual to presidential power.
Following the Supreme Court ruling on February 1 to reinstate 12 parliamentarians and release nine key political persons, Areef allegedly did not answer his phone when state leaders called to discuss the developing situation in the country. Attorney General Mohamed Anil announced this in a press conference soon after the ruling and reviled that Areef was removed from post soon afterwards due to lack of cooperation.
Areef is currently detained and being charged with attempting to orchestrate an act of terrorism.
Home minister further advised the police to remain loyal to the government and uphold the constitution.
