Villimale MP Ahmed Nihan on Tuesday night slammed 'Agenda 19', the manifesto compiled by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for the upcoming parliamentary election, as "weak and deceitful".

The parliamentary group leader of opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) made the statement at the campaign rally held to garner support for Ibrahim Faisal, the candidate of People's National Congress (PNC) for the Hulhumale constituency.

Nihan declared that deceit and deception are characteristics of the governing coalition's main party MDP, and described the manifesto as 'Chichanda 19' (snake gourd).

He called on the people to elect lawmakers of constructive ideology, stating that those of destructive ideologies should not be allowed in parliament.

The lawmaker went on to indirectly criticise Ali Niyaz, the deputy chairperson of MDP and younger brother of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, also contesting for Hulhumale constituency.

"I'd say that the younger sibling of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih cannot hold the government of Ibrahim Mohamed Solih accountable in parliament. This needs no further interpretation", he said.

The PPM lawmaker further proclaimed that, over the course of his 15-year political career, he had witnessed the "destructive" seed planted in Maldives. Adding that western bodies are poised against Maldives owing to its state religion being Islam, he implied that MDP is an agent acting to promote western interests.
