The parliament will resume sessions of its first term on February 25.

According to local media Mihaaru, Parliament Speaker Qasim Ibrahim held a meeting with the parliamentary group leaders of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Jumhooree Party (JP), Adhaalath Party and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).

The parliamentarians collectively decided to hold the next session within a week.

The members who participated in the meeting include PPM parliamentary group leader Ahmed Nihan, MDP parliamentary leader Mohamed Aslam, JP parliamentary group leader Abdulla Riyaz, deputy leader of MDA parliamentary group Ali Mauroof, and Anaara Naeem who represents Adhaalath Party.

Opposition PPM's representative, Vilimale MP Nihan gave a statement to Mihaaru, revealing that the meeting centered around pending work of the parliament. The Vilimale MP did not provide any further details.

Nihan also praised Qasim for carrying out discussions before making decisions, unlike previous parliament speakers. Nihan expressed satisfaction regarding the greater participation of political parties.

While the first session of parliament for 2019 was held on February 7, it consisted only of the address delivered by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

In his address, President Solih guaranteed the citizens' rights and made a commitment to improving the state of the nation through development projects and establishing due justice.

It is surmised that the state will propose a considerable number of bills during the new parliamentary term. The government had previously announced that the swift approval of state proposed bills would facilitate the fulfilment of President Solih's electoral pledges.
