'Renewed sense of purpose for PPM after SC verdict': deputy leader

Deputy leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Abdulla Abdul Raheem, on Sunday stated that the party has a renewed sense of purpose following the Supreme Court’s verdict against the annulment of the Presidential Election held on September 23.

Speaking at the first PPM press conference following the verdict, Abdul Raheem, who is also the parliamentarian for the constituency of Fonadhoo, stated that the party respected the apex court’s decision.

Abdul Raheem also stated that the verdict provides PPM an opportunity to continue to looking into the alleged election fraud. The PPM vice-president guaranteed that the party would keep seeking justice. The verdict states that any suspected criminal activity or corruption in assigning ballot printing can be investigated further.

Abdul Raheem also refuted rumours on social media that incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was planning to flee the country. He guaranteed that the incumbent president would remain in Maldives to serve the citizens, whether he was in government or opposing it.

PPM's vice-president pledged the full backing and support of the party to the outgoing President Yameen.

Abdul Raheem stated that PPM would remain a responsible opposition party and attempt to explain the new administration’s policies.

Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed also spoke at the press conference, stating that PPM had brought about considerable economic development in the past five years, and would always operate within the bounds of the law.
